They were exploring Florida in their RV, a Winnebago Micro Minnie trailer they towed with a Land Rover LR4. I checked it out and was impressed at what I found. It seemed like a perfect setup to travel and explore the United States. So, I briefly discussed it with Jake on a trip back from visiting my brother in North Carolina for my birthday and we agreed it would be <strong>Most Excellent<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-bright-red-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-bright-red-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">We took command of Starship Excellent Adventure in the summer of 2020 at the beginning of the infamous COVID cluster-fuck. The timing, as I would see later, was perfect!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first step was the muscle. The Ford Ranger was fine for pulling our boat, Lark&#8217;s Tongues in Aspic, but would not cut the mustard to pull a trailer. It was also dull to drive. I had envisioned a scenario where we could travel to different places, park the trailer, and explore the local area in style!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had my eye on the BMW X6 for a while. It seemed like it would do the job and not look like every other SUV out there. Plus, it had the Teutonic attention to detail and performance I have so loved in BMWs since the 1980s. I checked them out, and the 6-cylinder version had better-than-average feedback. I got them to install a trailer hitch before I picked it up. This turned out to be a big fucking mistake. However, the car was great; it drove as I expected and clearly had the power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, I started looking at the trailers. I decided I would get a Winnebago after talking to my friends about their experience. I settled on the smallest dual-axle model they made. It was outfitted with a queen bed in the front and a bathroom in the rear. You could stand up and take a shower, which fits my needs fine. It turns out it was one a customer ordered but could not pay for. It turns out the European hitch the BMW dealership installed was entirely inappropriate for several reasons. I replaced the one the dealer put in with a standard aftermarket 2-inch receiver. I tried it with the hitch alone and quickly invested in a good load stabilizer\/sway bar setup. After a lot more fooling around adjusting the trailer axle heights, I was able to make it work. I added more storage for my computer and camera and extended the table top by replacing the rearmost bench seat. I also removed the flat-screen TV and added deeper cabinets for pots and pans. Along the way, we visited Myrtle Beach, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and the Wright Brothers Museum. We also met my cousin and her family in Delaware, where I visited the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base. Afterward, we headed to Mystic, Connecticut, and the Mystic Seaport Museum. Finally, we reached Cape Cod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our return trip took us through the Hudson River Valley, the Poconos, Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and a Heritage Museum. We then visited Harper\u2019s Ferry Civil War history park, Thomas Jefferson\u2019s Monticello, and Big Stone Gap, which had a history museum of southwestern Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We met up with my brothers and embarked on a journey through our Horton genealogy on the Dead Hortons Tour. We visited four previous generations of my father\u2019s mother\u2019s family in southwestern Virginia. Afterward, we gathered at Lisa and Dave\u2019s L&amp;D Ranch in the picturesque Smoky Mountains.
